Central Sunbelt FCU Consumer Warning – Text Messaging Phishing Scam
Date: December 22, 2014
Central Sunbelt FCU has recently learned that a large number of persons in the Pine Belt region were targeted by a phishing scam. This scam is known to come via text message with intent to collect personal debit card information.
An example of this phishing attempt is as follows:
Your check card has been deactivated. Please call 801-822-0805.
Upon calling, the caller is prompted to enter their full 16 digit card number and PIN. Central Sunbelt would like to remind the public that their financial institution already has access to an account holder’s information and would only request enough information to verify a person for security purposes. An account holder should never reveal their full card number, CVV/CVC code (three numbers on the back of their card) or PIN.
We advise all persons to ignore and delete this message if received. If you ever are uncertain of the validity of communications regarding your financial institution, we recommend that you immediately call your bank or credit union directly. Any unauthorized attempts to collect your personal financial information should be immediately reported to your financial institution to uphold the safety of your account.
Central Sunbelt advises consumers to be vigilant to prevent unwanted fraud on their financial accounts. Continued attempts may come via automated phone call or e-mail.
Central Sunbelt Federal Credit Union is insured by the NCUA to at least $250,000 and backed by the full faith and credit of the United States Government. Central Sunbelt currently serves over 30,000 member/owners with five branches in Laurel, Hattiesburg, McComb, and a sixth branch opening soon in Waynesboro.
