Your friend Ashley may be funding ISIS.. or worse...
December 28, 2015
Facebook's built in friend suggestions are notorious for pressuring you to add complete strangers to your friend list - but do not give in! Facebook often thinks because of mutual friends, or similar interests, you should expand your friend/fan base to include as many of these 'like-minded' individuals as possible!
The problem is, we often think that because a good friend, or group of close friends, has 'friended' someone, that we should too - and Facebook constantly reminds us it is a good idea until we click that button. You don't want to be the only one in your core group of friends who doesn't know that person. Who are they? Why should you feel left out?
The reality is that many Facebook accounts are completely fake. Anyone can create a Facebook profile and make up an entire lifestyle. Some have been caught with a multitude of fake accounts using them to defraud people, sometimes out of tens of thousands of dollars.
A current scam is running rampant where someone makes a fake account, pretending to be reputable member of society. We have an example of one named 'Ashley' below. They work at a well known organization, are family oriented, talk about their religious values, and even post fake personal or family pictures.
Once you friend them, they will start to let you in on a secret to make 'fast free money', as if that is such a thing! They will even show you pictures or screenshots of proof that their other friends received free cash.
Once the scam falls apart, the immediate responsibility falls on you since the money that passed through your account was fraudulent. This will lead to the funds being taken away, even if they're not in your posession any longer, and can even lead to prosecution.
In the end, you lose, but your friend, 'Ashley' in this case, makes out and will already be on to other trusting victims with an entirely different account and persona. One can only guess on what illegal activities 'Ashley' is taking part in with the fradulent cash she is earning through these scams. These have often been known to link to fund illegal drugs, firearm trade, and terrorism.
Here are a few examples of pictures of one notorious scammer, 'Ashley'. Be cautious if you ever see anyone posting these types of messages, or conducting any sort of suspicious activity. Better yet, don't talk with anyone except for those you truly know!
